Traceability and Identification

National Tattoo Numbering Strategy

As part of the current system, all hogs are identified with a shoulder slap tattoo prior to going to slaughter. This serves as a means of producer identification for payment purposes, and also facilitates a degree of traceability. Some areas in Canada collect this slaughter information in a database.

The Canadian Pork Council, searching for a means to commonly identify all hogs for a national hog ID and traceability system, recognized the potential of the current tattoo numbering strategy. The tattoo numbering strategy, currently being implemented, will be used as one of the components of the national hog traceability system.
